LISTEN: WEEZER Hits Rock Charts With Toto Covers “Africa” And “Rosanna”

Thanks to one determined fan and social media using its powers for good, Rivers Cuomo finally agreed to bless the rains in Africa and shot a pair of classic Toto songs back onto the Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart.

Weezer’s cover of “Africa” launches at No. 9 (June 9), while “Rosanna” made the list at No. 29. The originals hit Nos. 1 and 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983 and 1982.

If you don’t know the story, late last year a Twitter account run by a determined Weezer fan begged them to cover “Africa.” Then one day Weezer gave in and a Toto cover appeared – except it was the wrong song, they released “Rosanna” in what could possibly be the best internet troll of the year, and in reality the cover was actually really good. And then, days later “Africa” came on the heels of “Rosanna” and with just three days of digital sales and streaming, plus six days of radio airplay, “Africa” shot straight to the top 10 of Hot Rock Songs.
