Check out the Rock Hall’s sixteen nominees, including seven first-timers, for the 2021 induction class.
Punk, metal, soul, hip hop, new wave, and even world music get representation among the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’s list of nominees in consideration for the induction class of 2021.
For eligibility, an artist’s first commercial work must have been released at least 25 years ago. And for any artist to appear as a nominee in their first year of eligibility is a strong indicator of their massive impact. And in 2021, there are two such artists.
If I use the phrase “ambassador of rock and roll”, who comes to mind? Setting aside the Foos commercial achievements and critical reviews over the years – the almost-universally beloved Dave Grohl is the ultimate ambassador of rock and roll. The exact sort of artist the Rock Hall loves to recognize. Grohl would become a two-time inductee (Nirvana, 2014). And should Foo Fighters earn the honor this year, Grohl might make history. My research, medicore though it is, cannot unearth another inductee who made the Rock Hall twice in their first year of eligibility each time!
Cue the predictable “he’s not rock!” complaints. He’s not a businessman. He’s a business, man!
Five other artists are on the ballot for the first time despite, in some cases, YEARS of eligibility.
I’ll try to keep this impartial as Maiden is probably my all-time favorite metal band. But aside from maybe Sabbath or Metallica, has their been a single more impactful or consistent heavy metal band? Most of the guys are in their mid 60’s and still put on phenomenal live shows. Eligible since 2005.
The trailblazing, all-girl new wave band has been eligible since 2006.
Nigerian multi-instrumentalist Fela Kuti, singer-songwriter Carole King (previously inducted as a non-performer), and soul singer/psychic hotline maven Dionne Warwick round out the other first-time nominees.
Here are the nine other artists who landed on the 2021 ballot.
Mary J. Blige
LL Cool J
New York Dolls
Rage Against The Machine
